INTERVIEW: Jordaan Mason talks writing about trauma, astronomy, and the empowerment of processing through creation

Jordaan Mason is a Toronto-based lo-fi folk singer-songwriter who writes about mental illness, trauma, and queerness. Their latest album, earth to ursa major, came out in May of this year and weaves all these subjects with overarching astronomy imagery to tell Mason’s story about trying to find a place where they belong. Following a recent European tour Jordaan did with Crywank, our Co-Editor Nat interviewed Jordaan all about the new album.

INTERVIEW: shy kids talk about their new album, animating a candy apocalypse, and their idea for an Area 51 music video

Toronto band shy kids recently put out the record in a state, a visual album about their travels across the United States, in February. The band has been playing a few album release shows to celebrate over the past two months, including one date in their hometown and two shows in New York City in late March. Odd Blue Fruit’s Matt Marlin caught up with the band before their Bowery Electric show (opening for Teen Girl Scientist Monthly) to talk about everything from the new album to filmmaking to the philosophy of trying to make a unique show no matter what state they play in.
